Description
UNIVERSAL YARDSTICKS
Many substances used in medicine cannot be assessed by chemical and physical tests alone because they are impure mixtures of great complexity. The only way to measure their potency is by tests on animals (as in the case of vaccines, for example) or on micro-organisms (as in the case of antibiotics) and by comparing the result of a test in which a known “standard” sample of the substance has been used. Such samples are made available to laboratories all over the world by two international reference laboratories designated by WHO, one in London and one in Copenhagen.
Our photo shows in what form these standards are sent out.
