Nutrition in the WHO region of the Americas
Description
The value of a daily dose of vitamin B-12 in children's diet was being studied by the Institute of Nutrition of the Pan-American Sanitary Bureau (WHO's regional office) in Guatemala. In the village school of Magdalena, in addition to free lunches provided by the Institute, half the children were given B-12 regularly and the others received a pill of no nutritional value. The Physical development of both groups was to be compared. If the vitamin supplement was found to have a beneficial effect, it would be introduced in all Guatemalan schools. The Institute also established a clinic in Magdalena.
Nurse Bertha Soberania chats with a mother and gives advice on proper nutritional care for the child.
