Nutrition in the WHO region of the Americas
Description
World Health Day, observed each year on 7 April marks the anniversary of the coming into force of the Constitution of the World Health Organization in 1948. The theme chosen for 1957 was "Food and Health" and stressed the need to break the vicious circle of poor health - impaired productive capacity - low production of foodstuffs - under-nutrition - more sickness and less productive power. Founded early in 1946 under the auspices of the Pan-American Sanitary Bureau (the World Health Organization's Regional Office for the Americas) the Institute of Nutrition of Central America and Panama carried out field surveys to study diet patterns in a campaign to combat malnutrition.
A family dinner at Amatitlan. INCAP's nurse Aida Mazariegos has previously weighed all cooked foods. She is staying with the family for seven days and recording their diet pattern as an essential part of survey work.
