Description
Training nurses in Nepal.Â
As part of the Government's plan to train nurses for institutional, home care and public health work, the first nursing school in Nepal was opened in 1956 with the assistance of a World Health Organization team of three nurse educators. The school started with an enrolment of fifteen students and, by 1960, there were a dozen fully qualified Nepalese nurses, all of whom were trained at the school in Kathmandu. In addition to the Bir Hospital in Kathmandu where the Nepalese nurses receive practical training, a Maternity Hospital was opened in 1959 to serve as a midwifery training unit for students. WHO nurse educators lecture student nurses on medicine, surgery and nursing techniques.
Student nurses reporting for classes at the Kathmandu School of Nursing, the first nursing school in Nepal, opened with the assistance of the World Health Organization. In 1963, sixteen students enrolled in the nine-months course given in midwifery.
