Description
Training for tomorrow
Visakhapatnam, on the East coast of India in the State of Andhra Pradesh, might be called a town of health students. Here doctors, both undergraduate and postgraduate, general trained nurses, health visitors, auxiliary nurse-midwives, health inspectors and the new category of auxiliary health worker are all being prepared. Special attention is paid in all courses to knowledge of disease prevention, health promotion and the problems of a rural population. Many of these students will work in the rapidly expanding rural health service which is developing alongside India community development programme.
WHO has sent staff, and UNICEF supplies, to help.
During a 2 ½ year course including general nursing (6 months), paediatrics (2 months), midwifery (10 months) and public health (12 months), health visitors are trained. During the first six months of her course the health visitor student learns simple nursing procedures. Here a student named Suguna is seen taking a patient's temperature.
