Visakhapatnam, on the East coast of India in the State of Andhra Pradesh, might be called a town of health students. Here doctors, both undergraduate and postgraduate, general trained nurses, health visitors, auxiliary nurse-midwives, health inspectors and the new category of auxiliary health worker are all being prepared. Special attention is paid in all courses to knowledge of disease prevention, health promotion and the problems of a rural population. Many of these students will work in the rapidly expanding rural health service which is developing alongside India community development programme.



WHO has sent staff, and UNICEF supplies, to help. 
During a 2-year course comprising 9 months general nursing and 15 months midwifery, auxiliary nurse midwives are trained. Later, they will nurse the patients in the primary health centres as well as practice rural midwifery. Good nutrition being the basis of good health, the auxiliary nurse midwife, along with all other health workers, is given a sound knowledge of food values.
