Description Hoa Binh City - 12 March, 2018: Eye of Mr Nguyen Thanh Tang, age 51, during a cataract operation performed by Dr Bui Cao Ngu, surgeon and Vice Director of the Social Disease Prevention Center in Hoa Binh City in Northern Vietnam, around 100km from Hanoi.
Mr Nguyen Thanh Tang lives in Dan Chu commune, Hoa Binh City. He works as a Tax officer. He’ll be back to work a week after his operation
Both of his eyes have been affected with cataract. The doctors diagnostic that his cataract was caused by the usage of corticoids for a long time. He took these medicines because of problems in the joints and bones.

At Hoa Binh Social Disease Prevention Center, located 2 hours driving from Hanoi, 800 to 1.000 patients have eye operations every year. The majority of patients in the area are between 60 to 80 years old, and just 7% of the patients are below the age of 60. Children patients usually have genetic/congenital disease, and they are treated to the National Hospital in Hanoi.
For those who have been screened and found to need cataract operations, they can usually get operation after 3 days.
For years, the Fred Hollows Foundation have been providing support to the patients with eye affections in the area, providing proper equipment for surgeries and eye screening, building the waiting area for patients and training the medical staff from the Hoa Binh Social Disease Prevention Center, as well as providing the financial support for expenses in cataract surgery that are not provided by the insurance, as transport and meals for those living in more isolated areas.
