Description Hoa Binh City - 12 March, 2018: Bu Thi Vong, age 60, in the waiting room after her cataract operation at for a the Social Disease Prevention Center in Hoa Binh City in Northern Vietnam. She lives in Lac Son city, 50km away from Hoa Binh City. She was diagnosed with cataract in her left eye at the General Hospital in August 2017, then decided to have the operation just now in March 2018. She works selling fermented vegetables at the local market in her town, after the operation she plans to go back to work, as she don’t wants to be idle and needs to works ro get some incomes. She have one daughter and one son. She came to the operation in company of her husband and she stayed over night in the Center because she lives far away.

At Hoa Binh Social Disease Prevention Center, located 2 hours driving from Hanoi, 800 to 1.000 patients have eye operations every year. The majority of patients in the area are between 60 to 80 years old, and just 7% of the patients are below the age of 60. Children patients usually have genetic/congenital disease, and they are treated to the National Hospital in Hanoi.
For those who have been screened and found to need cataract operations, they can usually get operation after 3 days.
For years, the Fred Hollows Foundation have been providing support to the patients with eye affections in the area, providing proper equipment for surgeries and eye screening, building the waiting area for patients and training the medical staff from the Hoa Binh Social Disease Prevention Center, as well as providing the financial support for expenses in cataract surgery that are not provided by the insurance, as transport and meals for those living in more isolated areas.
