Description
Artemisinin-derivative drugs are being developed to combat malaria. The active component, artemisinin, was first discovered in a plant, Artemisia annua, which was traditionally used in China to control fever. A. annua grows in various parts of the world, but the potency of the plants is variable. It is being cultivated on a large scale for experimental purposes in several countries. This field of plants originating from Yugoslavia is being grown at the Walter Reed Army Institute, Silver Springs, Virginia, USA.
