Nutrition in the WHO region of the Americas
Description
By fundamental investigations in the field of nutrition, by stimulating and guiding work in applied nutrition and by training large numbers of students from both the Central American area and other parts of the world, the Institute of Nutrition of Central America and Panama (INCAP) constituted an important instrument of WHO nutrition Policy. It made contribution, not only to the countries of Central America and Panama, but also to other relatively underdeveloped areas of the world which had similar nutrition problems.
The Institute of Nutrition of Central America in Panama is waging a successful campaign against kwashiorkor, a sometimes mortal disease caused by protein deficiency. The treatment consists largely of dietary measures, giving skimmed milk and other animal proteins, fresh vegetables and as little fat as possible. Here a mother with her child, suffering from kwashiorkor, are waiting for treatment in a hospital in Guatemala City.
