Headline School health in the WHO Eastern Mediterranean region
Description The Government of Syria with the help of WHO and UNICEF is attacking the problem of favus (a fungus infection of the scalp). In some villages in the northern part of the country, every child is a victim of this disfiguring disease. Since March 1955, the control project team have examined 30,000 children and treated 7,000. The whole project is now being taken over by the Syrian doctors, nurses and X-ray technicians and the work will be extended by means of a mobile X-ray unit to cover remote rural areas. The total number of infected children is estimated at 40,000.
A Syrian X-ray technician prepares an infected child for treatment.
