Description
The WHO headquarters, just outside of Geneva, was built from 1962 to 1966. Jean Tschumi (1904-1962) of Lausanne, Switzerland, was the architect of the building. It is a concrete structure of 150 metres long, 20 metres wide, and 34 metres high supported by 22 columns.
The foundation stone of the new Headquarters building of the World Health Organization was laid during a ceremony held on the 24th of May 1962 on the building site "En Choutagnes", at Pregny, on the outskirts of Geneva. Present at the ceremony were representatives of the Swiss Federation and the City and Canton of Geneva, the delegates to the Fifteenth World Health Assembly (representing the 115 Member and Associates Member States of WHO) and representatives of the United Nations and various international bodies with headquarters in Geneva.
