Headline Construction of WHO headquarters building - Foundation stone Ceremony, 1962

Description The WHO headquarters, just outside of Geneva, was built from 1962 to 1966. Jean Tschumi (1904-1962) of Lausanne, Switzerland, was the architect of the building. It is a concrete structure of 150 metres long, 20 metres wide, and 34 metres high supported by 22 columns.

The text of a document which will be sealed by hand into the foundation stone of the new WHO headquarters building was solemnly read out during this morning's (23 May 1962) Plenary Session of the 15th World Health Assembly by Dr Paul Lambin (Upper Volta), one of the Assembly's Vice-Presidents. The document, written in the French language and signed by Dr Sergei V. Kurashov, President of the World Health Assembly and Minister of Health of the USSR and by Dr Marcolino G. Candau, WHO Director-General, records that the construction of the building was decided upon by the 12th World Health Assembly in May 1959, and that the foundation stone was laid on the twenty-fourth day of May in the year one thousand nine hundred and sixty-two. The list of WHO Member States to date, the list of delegates at the 15th World Health Assembly, and the WHO Constitution will also be sealed into the foundation stone.
