EL SALVADOR: "A move in the right direction" - 1952
Description
Water for Loma - Supplying Loma de Ramas, a village of 400 people, with a steady flow of fresh, drinkable water was one phase of a general health programme carried out in El Salvador. WHO Sanitary engineers, working with the Government of El Salvador faced one major problem on the Loma project. This was the task of getting pipe and other materials from the supply depot at Guazapa, across a river, over some five miles of tortuous, rock-stream road and half way up a mountain. The people had the answer, men, women, and children volunteered and carried the supplies, in order that their village might benefit in better health and sanitary conditions.
Father Oswaldo Alvarenga of the local parish blesses the pipe and other materials as the villagers stand with bowed heads.
