Headline EU-WHO partnership: strengthening pandemic preparedness and response 
Description Ms Khalsy, an IPC nurse, performs surgical hand scrub before putting on personal protection equipment and entering an operating room at Muang Khong Hospital.

1 in 15 patients in low and middle-income countries will acquire an infection during a hospital stay. Better infection prevention and control (IPC) with water, sanitation and hygiene practices (WASH) practices can significantly reduce hospital infections. In Lao PDR, WHO is working to address this. With European Union support, improvements were made at 56 health facilities across the country. 
In 2021, the European Union (EU) and the World Health Organization (WHO) signed an agreement to support eight countries from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in the fight against COVID-19: Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand, and Viet Nam. The EU contribution is €20 million for three years. With this support, WHO has worked with partners to strengthen the response to COVID-19 and prepare for future pandemics.
