Headline Community level screening: 3rd TB prevalence survey in Cambodia
Description Cambodia conducted the first and second tuberculosis (TB) prevalence surveys in 2002 and 2011 respectively. These surveys demonstrated a 45% decline in the prevalence of bacteriologically confirmed TB during this period. About 500,000 TB patients have been cured and an estimated 400,000 deaths averted since 2000. Although multiple sources of evidence indicate that the burden of TB is falling in Cambodia, there is some degree of uncertainty regarding the TB burden as the last survey was conducted more than a decade ago. COVID-19 disruptions also impacted all areas of the TB cascade of care in Cambodia. The National Centre for Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control (CENAT) conducts a third national TB prevalence survey in order to provide the program with updated and more accurate information on the current tuberculosis burden and trend of disease caused by TB. This serves as baseline information to develop a plan to improve ways of TB control and care toward Ending TB in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) targets and the End TB Strategy targets. With funding support from the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and contribution funds from the Global Fund (GF), all three levels of WHO – Cambodia country office (CO), Western Pacific regional office (WPRO), and global headquarters (HQ) – have been working closely with the Research Institute of Tuberculosis, Japan Anti-Tuberculosis Association (RIT/JATA), Institut Pasteur du Cambodge (IPC) and USAID to provide technical support to CENAT to conduct the survey. Field work began in June 2023 and will continue until December 2023 at 45 different sites across the country. Final results are expected to be delivered in March 2024. Read more: Tackling tuberculosis (TB): new steps towards ending TB in Cambodia
