Sudan: Meningitis by Ahmed Youssef, 1974
Description
Meningitis is a serious public health hazard, particularly for the children and adolescents who represent the future hope of these countries in their struggle for a better life. In 1968 a new purified polysaccharide vaccine against cerebrospinal meningitis was developed by American workers and one form of it (group C vaccine) was proved to be effective against infection due to N. meningitidis group C. In 1971 and 1972 another form (group A vaccine) was proved effective in a field trial sponsored by WHO in Egypt and this was confirmed in a study carried out in 1973 in the Sudan, as well as in studies in Finland and South Africa.
Held in her father's arms, this child is not afraid of being vaccinated. Children between 6 months and 15 years of age are the most vulnerable to meningitis.
