ALGERIA: "Helping the children" by Patricia Appel - 1964
Description
A large public health team is assisting the Government of Algeria in planning and reorganizing the country’s public health system and in creating training facilities for medical and para-medical staff. Training schools have been established for medical assistants and nurses. A feature of the work is the important rehabilitation programme, other for polio and war victims. These photos show an aspect of rehabilitation of child polio victims at Douera Hospital, near Algiers.
11-year-old Nadir has been a victim of polio since early childhood. He has now been at Douera one year and has made particularly rapid progress.
Our photo shows Nadir with Miss Peggy Stanley, WHO physiotherapist, learning to stand without braces.
