Dr Emilio J. Pampana today was awarded the darling Foundation medal and prise "in recognition of the significant contribution to the epidemiology and control of malaria of a personal and original nature that he has made in the course of a long career devoted to malaria and international health". The prize is awarded periodically not only to honour eminent malariologists but also to honour the memory of Dr Samuel Taylor Darling who distinguished himself as a malariologist and who was killed by accident during a mission of the Malaria Commission of the League of Nations. Dr Emilio J. Pampana, was born in Florence in 1895 and studied at the University of Florence and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. His long career in malaria began in Colombia and later continued in Italy, where he joined the staff of the University of Rome. Later he was appointed Chief of the Department of Epidemiology at the Institute of Malariology in Rome. His long association with international health work began in 1931 when he became a member of the Health Section of the League of Nations, and continued almost without interruption until his retirement from active service with the World Health Organization last October. In 1958 Dr Pampana became Chief of the Malaria Section of WHO and in 1957 was appointed WHO's first Director of Malaria Eradication. The prize was presented by Sir John Charles, President of the Twelfth World Health Assembly currently meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, some 300 delegates from the 90 member and Associate Member States of WHO are participating in this important conference.
