Malaria in the WHO South-East Asia region
Description
Malaria was the foremost public health problem in the tropical and sub-tropical countries for centuries. In India alone, prior to 1947, it was estimated that nearly 100 million people suffered from the disease and there were over a million malaria deaths each year.
In 1958, the Government of India launched a nation-wide campaign for the eradication of malaria with WHO's assistance. Under this Programme 390 million people living in malarious areas were covered by a phased programme of intensive insecticide spraying followed by surveillance and vigilant maintenance. According to the statistic about 340 million people were then protected against the disease.
