Description
Created in 1955 with assistance from WHO, The Tehran Cancer Institute was organized for the up-to-date diagnosis and treatment of cases of cancer and malignant tumors. A cobalt therapy apparatus was set up and started operating in February 1958 with an average of 25 treatments per day, mostly cases of deep cancer. During the first ten months of 1958, 3092 new consultations were registered, 679 patients admitted to the hospital, 454 surgical operations were performed and 1078 patients treated by radiotherapy. Patients came for examination and treatment from all over the country. The rate of cancer was high in Iran, the most common cases being skin and larynx cancers.
