Headline France: "The basic troika gets to work" by Eric Schwab, 1954
Description The treatment of cancer varies from one patient to the next ; it is no longer the responsibility of a single doctor, but has to be decided jointly by a team. There are six main avenues of approach:

1. surgery (effective if done in time);

2. radiotherapy (which changes certain large molecules in the tissues and prevents divisions);

3. hormone therapy (breast cancer in women, for example, can be treated with male hormones and cancer of the prostate can be treated with female hormones);

4. drug treatment (chemotherapy has made great progress and is still developing rapidly);

5. immunotherapy (treatment by antibodies);

6. viruses versus cancer (still in the experimental stage: it may be possible to destroy cancer cells—and only the cancer cells— by viruses with special parasitic characteristics).

It is up to the team in charge of the case to decide which treatment or combination of treatments is best. World Health sets out to show here how such a team works together at the Gustave Roussy Institute at Villejuif near Paris and how the various specialists each play their part in treating the same patient. Such teamwork is recommended by a recent WHO expert committee on cancer control.
