Headline Republic of Korea: "The story of Kim In Soon" by Dale Whitney, 1963
Description The story of Kim In Soon - Perhaps 100,000 people suffer from leprosy in Korea - most of them are undiscovered and untreated. To find out the real extent of this disease and to prepare for a nation-wide public-health approach to leprosy control, the Korean Government in 1961 with the help of WHO established a leprosy control project in the province of Kyungaan Pukdo. This project covers many phases, from case-finding to health education. Kim In Soon, a six-year old from the village of Wedong Nyun, in Southern Korea, was doing her first year in school; when a WHO assisted mobile leprosy team found her symptoms of leprosy. Thanks to early diagnosis and modern drugs, Kim In Soon was able to continue leading her normal life. All she had to do was to take her sulfone tablets regularly.

Visit of the WHO-assisted mobile leprosy team, doing case finding in the school of In soon. Dr Youn Keun Cha, Director of the leprosy team, is shown doing the examination. He's giving each children a quick routine medical examination, using a stethoscope while looking for early signs of leprosy. Normally, any early leprosy lesions are examined with needle and cotton wool. Dr Cha noticed a faint whitish patch on In Soon's left cheek. Later, a proper examination was made and she was found to have early leprosy.
