Headline Bolivia: Impacts of violence against women - 2020
Description On 11 January 2020, Elvira stands outside the hospital in La Paz, Bolivia, where she last saw her daughter, Maria.

Maria died in 2014 after her boyfriend beat her in a drunken rage. Elvira is now taking care of Maria’s child, and has been trying to fight for her daughter's justice, but without success. At the time the photograph was taken the boyfriend was living free, across the street from her.

Around the world violence against women remains devastatingly pervasive and starts alarmingly young.

Across their lifetime, 1 in 3 women globally, around 736 million, are subjected to physical or sexual violence by an intimate partner or sexual violence from a non-partner – a number that has remained largely unchanged over the past decade.

Intimate partner violence is by far the most prevalent form of violence against women globally (affecting around 641 million).

Violence disproportionately affects women living in low- and lower-middle-income countries. An estimated 37% of women living in the poorest countries have experienced physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence in their life, with some of these countries having a prevalence as high as 1 in 2.
