Headline Vision in Viet Nam - 2018

Description Hoa Binh City - 13 March, 2018: Mrs Dinh Thi Nguyen, 80 (left) and to Mrs Trieu Thi Mui, 87 (right) preparing a tea in the house of Mrs. Mui after the yearly eye revision day at Thong Nhat Commune Health Center in Hoa Binh City in Northern Vietnam. They are friends since the year 1954. Every year around 100 elderly people from the Thong Nhat Commune attends the local Health Center to do a screening of their vision.
Mrs. Dinh Thi Nguyen had the right eye removed because of glaucoma; and in the left one she has serious cataract. She will be transferred for a cataract operation to the the Vietnamese National Institute of Ophthalmology (VNIO) in Hanoi.
Mrs. Dinh Thi Nguyen husband died 3 years ago and currently she lives in a farm with her extended family in Thong Nhat Commune in Hoa Binh City. She is from the Muong ethnic minority.
According to the doctor, Mrs. Trieu Thi Mui have no vision in the right eye anymore due to trachoma and she have cataracts in the left eye. She will be transferred to the Social Disease Prevention Center for a cataract operation.
Mrs. Trieu Thi Mui is from the Dao ethnic minority and have three daughters and one son who died at 8 years old. She got divorced when she was young so she had to raise her 4 children alone. Her husband was an alcoholic and beat her. Once, when her husband hit her and she had an eye injury. The doctor suspects that eye injury was the cause of the trachoma in her right eye, due the poor sanitation conditions at that time. Her three daughters are in their 60´s and lives nearby, but are too poor to support her, so she have to work to maintain herself producing and selling herbal medicines. She built by her own the house where she currently lives at Thong Nhat Commune in Hoa Binh City in Northern Vietnam.
