Description
Mabinti received her first COVID-19 vaccine from the mobile vaccination team in Rofunta, Sierra Leone on 6 December 2022.
“Before I was afraid to get the vaccine,” she said. “But now I’ve seen other people getting it, so I’m not afraid. I want to get the vaccine so that I don’t get COVID.”
Rofunta is located in Bombali District and is home to about 690 people. The community of mostly smallholder farming families is eight kilometres of rough dirt road away from the nearest health facility. Most residents in the community do not have the resources to make the journey to the health facility, which means that these mobile outreach campaigns are the only way that most community members are able to get vaccinated against COVID-19.
The vaccination team is made up of a community mobiliser and two nurses from the nearby Yoni Community Health Post. The community mobiliser, Ibrahim Sugar, works with partner organisation GOAL Ireland and speaks the local Temne language. Sugar arrives to the village early to engage with the community members and encourage them to come for their COVID-19 vaccines. The nurses, based at Yoni Community Health Post, take commercial motorbike taxis or walk to get to hard-to-reach communities like Rofunta.
In January 2022, WHO, UNICEF and Gavi established the COVID-19 Vaccine Delivery Partnership (CoVDP) to intensify support to COVID-19 vaccine delivery. Working with governments and essential partners, CoVDP provided urgent operational support to the 34 countries that were at or below 10% full vaccination coverage in January 2022 on their pathways toward achieving national and global coverage targets. The greatest benefits of this approach were increases in full vaccination and booster coverage for in both general and high-priority populations – older adults, healthcare workers, and persons with co-morbidities, including immunocompromised persons.
