Headline Health Services in the WHO European region 
Description One of the smallest countries in Europe, Albania, had in 1938 a total of 102 doctors for the whole country. There are now, in 1974, 1 doctor for 1000 population. Despite its mountainous terrain, medical services now reach the most remote parts of the country, providing free health care to a total population of 2 270 000. Malaria, a one-time threat, has been eradicated and, under a well-organized health service, Albania has established research centers for cancer and tuberculosis control, medical schools and training centers for all categories of health staff.



Rural Health Centre at Hyagjokaj, District of Lushny. The Centre provides diagnosis and ambulatory treatment for a total population of 4800 in 16 agricultural cooperative communities, and has only 2 beds for urgent or complicated cases. The staff comprises 1 doctor, his assistant, 1 dentist, 2 nurses and 2 nurse-midwives ; villagers arriving at the Centre for the consultation.
