Ageing in the WHO European region
Description
The proportion of old persons has increased in many given population. The process of urbanization, boosted by the migration of able-bodied youngsters from the countryside to the cities, has also lead to an increase in the proportion of old people left behind in village communities. All too often, what for generations have been large self-contained and self-supporting families have disintegrated. Meanwhile, progress in preventive and curative medicine in the national health care system as well as international activity in health promotion and disease prevention has led to a decrease in mortality among younger age groups and to an increase in longevity.
The increasing proportions of elderly people in the populations of both developed and developing countries indicate the need for greater attention to be paid to this group most of whom are women.
