Bangladesh - Diphtheria Prevention in Refugee Camps - 2017
Description
In the summer of 2017 after a wave of violence broke out in the Rakhine State of Myanmar, more than 700,000 Rohingya people - half of them children - sought refuge in Bangladesh. This massive exodus was followed by the rise of diphtheria among the extremely vulnerable population with low vaccination coverage and living in densely populated temporary settlements. WHO and its partners worked to contain the spread of the highly infectious respiratory disease through adequate prevention and effective treatment.
Medical supplies set on a desk for healthcare providers in the Samaritan’s Purse Diphtheria Treatment Centre. WHO provides diphtheria antitoxin to this clinic and ongoing training to its staff. Administering diphtheria antioxin is an intensive process requiring the doctor to remain at the patient’s bedside for several hours. Doctors are put on a roster at the treatment centres to provide care 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
