Headline Research in the WHO European region 
Description The increasing use of ionizing radiation and radioactive materials raises health problems. The field of radiation health covers not only radiation protection but, more broadly, includes the practical application of the findings of radio-biological research. Progress in this field depends greatly on improvements in the understanding of the somatic and genetic effects of ionizing radiation on man. Research into the effects of radiation on living tissues is being carried out at the Radiobiological Research Laboratory at Harwell, England. When roots of the broad bean are subjected to irradiation with X-rays or fast neutrons, the growth rate is affected.



Experiments performed with another type of radiation, fast neutrons, require the services of large and complicated machines. A tray containing the root tips is placed below the neutron target and ionization chambers arranged to measure the neutron dose. Water circulates round the bean roots to provide normal growing conditions.
