Health services in the WHO region of the Americas
Description
WHO assisted the Government of Panama to strengthen rural health services and to develop effective methods of health administration suited to the social, economic and cultural needs of the population. Facilities were also provided for the training of auxiliary and professional health promotion physicians, nurses, sanitary inspectors, laboratory technicians and health auxiliary workers. The Health Centre at Chorrera, 25 miles from Panama, included a dispensary, maternal and child health clinic, a school clinic, a dental clinic, a laboratory and environmental sanitation, health education and home visiting services. It was also an important training centre.
Rufina Rodriguez, 31, wife of an agricultural worker, is expecting her sixth child. Not yet three months pregnant, she is attending the clinic for her first check-up and will be followed through until delivery. The first check-up includes a thorough examination and a visit to the dentist.
