Cancer Research in the WHO African region
Description
The Cancer Research laboratory in Nairobi was set up by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in Lyon. Its aim was to track down the presence of aflatoxin in foodstuffs and fodder and to study the carcinogenic properties of this chemical. The laboratory also studied the carcinogenic properties of local plants eaten by cattle.
During the last two years an analysis has been carried out in several areas of the country of foodstuffs prepared by housewives. Samples will be examined in the laboratory to find out whether or not they contain carcinogenic substances.
