Headline
Health services in the WHO region of the Americas
Description
Health and progress was the central theme of a special issue of "World Health Magazine" devoted to Latin America. It showed the mutual dependence of the various components of well-being, in which health as a social service was included. It also stressed that only harmonious planned development could bring about progress. Health rightly appeared not only as a sound investment for the economic future of the countries, but as a basic factor that promoted progress and was decisive for well-being.
In the 60's, Latin America had only about 100,000 practicing physicians. It also lacked hospitals, health centres, and modern equipment.
