Headline Environmental Sanitation in the WHO region of the Americas 
Description Sanitation generally refers to the provision of facilities and services for the safe disposal of human urine and faeces. Inadequate sanitation is a major cause of disease world-wide and improving sanitation is known to have a significant beneficial impact on health both in households and across communities. The word 'sanitation' also refers to the maintenance of hygienic conditions, through services such as garbage collection and wastewater disposal.

Jamaica water supply, North of Spanish town - The man with the straw hat (at left) is Mr Arturo Velasquez, resident engineer from PAHO/WHO. The spring has a good yield but is not adequately constructed to prevent contamination. The water is pumped up hill to storage tanks and flows down by gravity to the consumers.
