Headline Family Planning in the WHO region of the Americas

Description In the WHO perspective, family planning is concerned with the quality of life. It is a way of thinking and living that promotes the health and welfare of the family group and thus contributes to economic and social development.

In 1964 a government-sponsored family planning research programme was started in Jamaica at the Victoria Jubilee Hospital and was later extended to other clinics and hospitals. Before 1964 Family Planning was taken care of by volunteer agencies and there was no opposition to the programmes, not even by the Catholic population who were given sex education courses in their schools. In September 1967 the "National family planning board of Jamaica" was established. Since then the government clinics are counselling any woman who applies for advice, including teenagers who have had babies. Patients do have a choice of methods, but intrauterine Devices are favored by the clinics. The "pill" is available since May 1966, at a nominal charge of one shilling per month, but indigent patients may get them free. Patients are listening to explanations of various methods of contraception, in a Kingston clinic.
