Description
International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in France
IARC biological laboratories.
Researcher making some tests on the samples. Biological analysis of cells is crucial to improve cancer treatment and prevention. Biological laboratories at IARC are used by WHO scientific researchers to improve global knowledge about cancer. For instance, several tanks contain 6 million human samples collected from 1,5 million healthy people all over the world. They are stored at IARC for several decades in liquid nitrogen at minus 196°C. Metadata about the living conditions and lifestyles of these people are stored and when some of these people develop cancer, researchers can compare the DNA of these stored healthy cells with the one collected from their tumours.
