Description
WHO risk communication assessment on Zika Virus in Jamaica
After arriving in Brazil in May 2015, Zika virus rapidly swept across the Americas. By January 2016 it had reached the island of Jamaica, and according to statistics reported to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the World Health Organization (WHO), there were 203 confirmed cases of Zika in Jamaica between January 2016 and January 2018.
Zika virus infection during pregnancy can cause infants to be born with microcephaly and other congenital malformations, known as congenital Zika syndrome. Infection with Zika virus is also associated with other complications of pregnancy including preterm birth and miscarriage.
At the Antenatal clinic of Victoria Jubilee Hospital, several intercept interviews where conducted with pregnant women to find out their level of awareness and concerns in relation to Zika and related complications.
