Rebuilding health systems in tsunami affected zones of Southern India
Description
Training of Trainers (TOT) Dr Jay Kumar a specialist on mental trauma from the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), Bangalore imparting training to school teachers and health workers on how to distress people. The work of NIMHANS is supported by WHO.Â
Over 15,000 people died in India when a tsunami struck the coasts of India on December 26, 2004. Worst affected was the coastal district of Nagapattinam, which alone saw the deaths of nearly 7000 people. The health infrastructure was severely damaged in many places like Nagapattinam where the over 400 bedded Government General Hospital itself was flooded. Many health sub-centres and primary health centres also took a beating in the tsunami. Despite such a severe beating, fortunately no communicable disease outbreaks happened in the post-tsunami period as was widely feared. Clean drinking water was made available within days and now all those affected by the tsunami have been moved into temporary shelters. Since then many organisations including the World Health Organization (WHO) through the government has been rebuilding the devastated health infrastructure. A Herculean task is under way to bring back normalcy in the lives of those affected by the tragedy. Very active psycho-social counselling is being imparted to reduce the mental trauma the victims are undergoing.
