Jordan: "57 camps in 4 countries" by Paul Almasy, 1963
Description
The 1,200,000 refugees of Palestine are scattered over some 250,000 square kilometers, an area larger than that of Great Britain. In December 1949, in order to help them, the General Assembly of the United Nations set up UNRWA, which stands for United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near-East. The General Assembly also requested the World Health Organization, the Food and Agriculture Organization, the UN Children’s Fund and other agencies to provide supplies, staff and urgently needed services without delay.
UNRWA encourages health education. The prevalence of disease is due as much to ignorance and prejudice as it is to poverty. UNRWA signed an agreement with WHO in 1953, under which WHO provided consultants and advised the Agency about its health education programme, which is supported by information campaigns, lectures, posters and audio-visual means.
