Mental health in the WHO European region
Description
In the heart of Switzerland lies the mountainous state of Valais. There, for thirty years, under the stimulation of Dr André Repond, a member of the WHO Expert Panel on Mental Health, an experiment was carried on, which was an example to all underdeveloped countries that were establishing mental health services: a school medical service engaged in case-finding and treatment of mental disorders in children (psychologists, psychotherapists and psychiatric social workers) dubbed by the villagers "Les Demoiselles des Nerfs" regularly visited the most remote villages to examine children with nervous disorders such as enuresis, stuttering and tics, with psychosomatic illnesses and with character problems of the order of shyness, aggressiveness and temper tantrums.
Weekly reports are made to Dr A. Repond in conference with entire team to discuss individual problems, procedure and methods of treatment.
