Japan: "By the sweat of my brow" by Takeshi Takahara, 1962
Description
For thousands of years people such as Seijiro Yamamoto, a Japanese fisherman, have been pursuing their task of wresting more food from land and sea to still the hunger of their families and the growing hunger of the world.Â
Photographed and interviewed by World Health he tells in his own language of his work and of his hope.
"I have been a fisherman all my life and I'm 63 now. My son, Kazuo, could handle the boat, the Seikishi Maru, but I'm not retiring yet. I built her 4 years ago. She has all sorts of improvements my father did not know. Five of us sail the Seikishi Maru, and for so many years now that each man knows what the others are thinking. There's little wasted words or movement when the fish is running. That's the way it should be. My forebears have been fishermen at Misaki for over 500 years and I hope there will be Yamamotos sailing past Oshima Island for another 500 years."
"After dinner comes television. Sono, my wife, likes to tune the set. Next to her, Kazuo, my son. His wife, Setsuko, holds my youngest grandchild Terumi. I am holding Takumi, who one day will sail with his father."
