Description For thousands of years people such as Harukichi Saito, a Japanese farmer, have been pursuing their task of wresting more food from land and sea to still the hunger of their families and the growing hunger of the world.

Photographed and interviewed by World Health he tells in his own language of his work and of his hopes. "My name is Harukichi Saito. I am 62, and a farmer. My son, Tatsuo, 27, is a farmer too, and with his help and the things he learned at agricultural college we've turned our farm into one of the most modern and most productive in our area. I have much to be thankful for."

"My daughter-in-law says the hothouse is her favourite place on the farm. Etsuko, like all good wives, is skilled at flower-arranging, so in addition to selling flowers, we always have fresh flower arrangements in our home. Tetsuo learned about the hothouse cultivation at college, where he got the idea for raising carnations."
