Description
Malaria eradication among the "Head-hunters "The valley of death was the popular name for the high plateau of Tabuk on the island of Luzon, Philippines. Although it was always extremely fertile, farmers deserted the area because malaria made it impossible for people to live there. As a result of systematic malaria control, the number of settlers increased every year regularly between 1961 and 1976 as the health situation improved - thanks to the effort of WHO/assisted national malaria team. The area covered by the malaria eradication unit included 23 villagers with a total population of 22,000 on the Tabuk plateau and remote villages in the mountains overlooking the plateau. The inhabitants of the mountain area belonged to the primitive Kainga tribe called "Head-Hunters" because in the tribal wars they used to cut off the heads of their enemies and hang them at the entrance of their houses.
The headquarters of Malaria Eradication Unit is situated at the northern end of the Tabuk plateau. Every day, people from the region come to the headquarters where health officer and nurses take blood samples, carry out microscope examinations and distribute antimalarial drugs. Individual cards are established for each person from whom blood samples have been taken
