Description Patients are being cured at home in Madras - The advent of powerful anti-tuberculosis drugs has brought hope of recovery throughout the world to millions of people who previously had none. The medical profession, too, was faced with a new situation: new methods of controlling TB were evolving, among them home treatment, which altered the entire approach to the world problem. All this emerged from intensive investigations carried out by WHO in cooperation with a number of agencies and government authorities in India and elsewhere.

At Madras, a World Health Organization TB Team is experimenting in the treatment of tuberculosis with a new product, easy to administer in mass campaigns: isoniazid. In this part of India, tuberculosis is still considered as "unclean". One TB patient, Visalam, the wife of a dhobi (laundry worker) was evicted from her home and chased out of the community because a member of the WHO team went to her home to treat her.
