Malaria in the WHO South-East Asia region
Description
In 1975, 99 people died of malignant malaria in India, as against three deaths reported in 1974. Sixty-six of the deaths were in Assam. The lethal malignant strain (Plasmodium falciparum) accounted for a quarter of the eight million malaria cases that year a steadily increasing percentage. Apart from rising incidence in all the eastern states, Falciparum was seen in Gujarat, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, the Andaman Islands and several cases were discovered in Delhi as well.
