Description In 1951, in Bangkok, Thailand, a child guidance clinic was set up with WHO assistance. These photos show 7 year old Sukran and her 12 year old sister, Supayan, undergoing, tests.

While the mother is interviewed, the children undergo tests. Here, under the observant eye of Dr Supha Malakul na Ayuthya, director of the clinic, Sukran plays with a doll's house. A child, in fact, uses play as his natural and very personal means of expression. He may re-enact a scene in which he was scolded by changing the personalities to that he is the scolder and no longer the person scolded: "You, nasty, messy dolly!". Or he may re-enact an incident where he was frightened and compensate for his fear by being the master of the situation: "Look, it's a huge dog and I'm petting it!" By observing such play, the psychiatrist can often gain insight into the tensions, the desires, the hatreds of the child and perhaps derive valuable clues to what events have brought about a disturbance.
