Malaria in the WHO South-East Asia region
Description
Reconnaissance patrol in the Himalayan foothills
Planning of a malaria eradication campaign can, in most countries, be thought of in terms of jeeps, railways and airfreight. In Nepal, the campaign was worked out in terms of porters, runners and four-legged transport: where to employ porters, where mules, assignment of porters' loads, storage to supplies, availability of local labour and weather conditions. As part of his assignment to organize the supply lines for the malaria campaign in the mountains of Nepal, WHO sanitarian Thomas J. MacInnes made a ten-day 165 mile long march from Pokhara to Kathmandu through the mountains of Nepal.
MacInnes explains to US trained social education officer in the village of Staneswar the purpose and work of Nepal's Malaria Eradication Organization.
