Headline Historical collection: First Aid
Description Better first aid and care during transport to hospital could save the lives of approximately 20 percent of road accident victims. Head and thoracic injuries may affect the respiratory system and irreparable damage may be done to the brain through lack of oxygen for 6 to 10 minutes, consequently air passages must be cleared, and artificial respiration begun within that time. Mouth-to-nose and mouth-to-mouth artificial respiration is now considered by most authorities to be the best method. It is the least tiring, requires no strength and is the easiest to learn and to remember. The teaching of this method needs a minimum 15 min. introductory lecture and 10 to 15 min. training for each first-aider. Such simple measures, given immediately, could save many lives. Experts assembled by WHO made a strong recommendation that everyone who receives a driving license should have the necessary knowledge to give immediate aid. Our photos were taken at Les Samaritains, Geneva, who every year train about 200 persons in first aid.
