Nursing in the WHO region of the Americas
Description
After the first contact with the prenatal home by the Public Health Nurse, the patient is advised to make regular visits to the local clinic. The Public Health Nurse also makes frequent home visits to the expectant mother and on these visits she tries to get the local midwife to accompany her. During the course of her visit the Nurse gives the midwife a practical demonstration of prenatal care. She shows the midwife how to make a routine check-up, taking the temperature, blood-pressure, a urine analysis, etc., while the physician at the local clinic advises the young mother-to-be on diet, physical care, etc. This medical examination is followed up by regular reports on the case turned in by the Nurse in charge. The midwife takes an active part in the nurse's work and in this way learns to understand the necessity for elementary hygiene and for favourable sanitary conditions for the birth.
Public Health Nursing, El Salvador. This is the first time a Public Health Nurse has visited this mother and child since the birth of the baby 6 days ago. Nurse Marroquin is accompanied by the midwife who delivered the child. This midwife has been working as such for 20 years and during that time has delivered 200 babies.
