Urbanization and health in the WHO region of the Americas
Description
LeFrak City in the New York suburb of Queens consists of 24 buildings each of them 18 storeys high. When completed in 1966 it has 6,000 air-conditioned units that all in all house 25,000 persons. The self-contained community is planned to include swimming-pools, ice skating rinks, tennis courts, shopping facilities, nursery schools, etc. "Total facilities for total living" is the Lefrak motto. The tenants are middle-income families who, according to the builder, not only want to find apartments at reasonable rentals but also a shelter that will give them the opportunity for community enjoyment. LeFrak City has its own police, post office, newspaper, movie theatre, shopping centres, (2), beauty salons (4), and an underground "Roman Shopping Atrium" for each group of four buildings. There is also a bridge apartment which is rented solely for the purpose of keeping 17 tables of bridge going virtually night and day.
